Churches, Charities and Clubs – fighting for fair charging by water companies |

Brian Moore leads fight for justiceSports commentator Brian Moore is leading a fight for sports clubs affected by the Rain Tax. He said, “Changes in the way water charges are levied by some companies mean that some community non-profit sporting clubs are currently facing increases of more than 1,000 per cent over the next few years and could be threatened with extinction as a result. Yet these clubs are recognised by their local councils as being non-profit organisations and receive up to an 80 per cent rebate on their council charges. This has caused astonishing increases on previous bills. The following examples are taken from a huge number of letters I have received from clubs: Mellor Sports Club, Stockport: present charge £800 per annum, rising to £6,000 in 2010 Sphynx Tennis Club, Southport: £860pa, rising to £2580 in 2010 Clitheroe Cricket, Bowling and Tennis Club: £200pa to £3000 in 2011 Ashton under Lyne Cricket and Bowling Club: £1,000pa, rising to £2,002 next year. Many of those writing to me express real fears that their club will fold if UUP is allowed to continue such increases. Unsurprising: the percentage increases above range from 100 to 1,400 per cent. But United Utilities claims that it can only rate customers as domestic or non-domestic; as such, community clubs are bracketed with small and multinational companies – such as the pharmaceutical giant ICI in Warrington.” Sign his petition hereRead the full article here
