Churches, Charities and Clubs – fighting for fair charging by water companies |
No10 petition goes massive |

The Petition says: “We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to instruct water companies to return to charging churches as charities rather than as business premises.” |
Over 40,000 people have signed the petition on the 10 Downing Street website urging companies to rethink their new charging system for non-domestic customers. The numbers mean the Government has to take the objections seriously. The motion calls for churches to benefit, but remember, if the reductions apply to churches then they will also have to review the whole pricing scheme. David Boddy, churchwarden of North Thornaby in Teesside set up the church petition after his parish's bill from Northumbrian Water increased from £70 to £800. "Most of the proceeds from our summer fair will now be paying water bills," he said. "The response shows that the problem is widespread, We have seen a 1,300 per cent increase in our church water bill but it's not just us. The petition's popularity has led to its availability being extended until December."
